Support our New Facility!
Currently, Codman Academy, w
ith its 145 students and 30 staff, operates out of approximately 8,000 square feet of space. As Codman continues to grow year after year, we have outgrown our current space, having already expanded to the basement of the Citizens Bank down the street. However, as described above, we take a holistic approach to education and our location within the Health Center has played an integral role in our ability to provide high quality academics, enrichment opportunities, and health services to our students. Therefore, rather than relocate to an entirely new space, we have developed a plan to build an addition to the Codman Square Health Center – the Codman Square Health and Education Center, which would would add 30,000 square feet of space and renovate close to 8,000 square feet of space.
Codman Academy’s completed campus will include 10 classrooms, a library, administrative and staff work spaces, work/study rooms, and a multipurpose gathering room for alumni and families. The Health Center would gain significant clinical and office space, allowing it to increase the number of patients it serves daily. The Health Center also plans to open a walk-in eye clinic in the existing health center, in the space vacated by the school. The Health Center and school would also share a black box theater (Dorchester’s first), a dining facility and teaching kitchen and seminar rooms. These spaces would be open to the community during evening and weekend hours. Community members tell us there is a tremendous demand for a theater, which they anticipate using for plays, musical performances and lectures. We envision the seminar and teaching kitchen will by used by community members for adult education courses in subjects ranging from financial literacy to hands-on preparation of healthy meals. We expect the shared space will be in use 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
We broke ground in August 2011, and the building will be reading for occupancy for the start of the 2012-2013 school year! To date, we have jointly raised approximately $12.5 million toward our $14 million budget.
