Higher Education Focus

Our goal is to prepare all students to excel in higher education. In addition to learning the academic content, students develop the skills to succeed in both the academic and social aspects of higher education, including:

Time Management: A heavy homework load, including many long-term assignments, mandatory athletics, and many enrichment activities require students to budget their time carefully.

  • Research and Analysis: During their Codman education, students undertake research projects of increasing complexity. The culminating graduation project is a year long venture that includes secondary research, the design execution of primary research, and statistical data analysis. This research is synthesized into a significant paper and a corresponding social action. Students learn MLA citation and Cornell note taking.
  • Presentation Skills: All students speak before the entire school community multiple times. All freshmen participate in the Poetry Out Loud National Competition, and all sophomores compete in the English Speaking Union's Shakespeare Competition. All seniors deliver a Senior Talk, modeled on a Socratic apologia.
  • Independence: Codman students learn to manage their own academic careers. In particular, our fieldwork philosophy requires students to do research all over Boston. Students are expected to make their way to fieldwork sites on their own and in a timely manner.

College visits begin in the ninth grade during "College Day" fieldwork expeditions, where students are introduced  to the college application process and visit a variety of public and private colleges and universities. Juniors and seniors focus intensely on the college application process in college preparation classes taught by the Dean of College and Alumni Advising. Additionally, each year students and families are invited to financial aid information sessions.
