Special Education

For the majority of students with disabilities who require special education services, we offer an inclusive model. Services include:

  • Supports in the general education classroom by both a General Education and an Inclusion teacher.
  • Consultations with the Special Education Coordinator, and access to accommodations in class.
  • Students also needing related services during the school day are scheduled with the school social worker, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, and other related service providers as needed to meet the needs of individual students.
  • For a small number of students requiring more significant supports and modifications, the Higher Learning Institute is the substantially separate classroom that is open to students in grades 9 through 12.

The Special Education Coordinator is responsible for maintaining all Individualized Education Plans and 504 Plans. The Coordinator also collaborates and consults with staff to ensure that all students with disabilities receive appropriate, highly engaging, and high quality instructional services in the general education classroom, as well as to guarantee that accommodations and modifications identified in the students’ individual plans are being met.

    The IEP
The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is the legal document that identifies the services and accommodations that are necessary for students to make effective progress. The IEP is reviewed every year by the IEP Team. The IEP Team includes the student, the student's teachers, any specialists, and the parent(s). At this meeting, the team will discuss the student's academic and social/emotional progress, discuss post-secondary transition goals, and determine appropriate services and accommodations for the upcoming year.

Every three years, students will be reevaluated to determine eligibility for continuation of services. Once testing has been completed, a meeting will be held to discuss results and determine what, if any, changes need to be made to the students programs.

In both types of meetings, Codman Academy considers parents/guardians to be integral members of the team. Students are also expected to provide honest feedback and consideration to their education and their needs, with their post-secondary transition in mind.

Any questions about the referral or eligibility process should be directed to the Special Education Coordinator, Emily Barbara, at ebarbara@codmanacademy.org.
