Codman Students, Parents work to Close Epping Street: news story

How fast are the cars on Epping Street?

At the first Parent Council, parents decided to work on closing Epping Street for safety and environmental reasons. Cars whip around Norfolk Street corner and cut through to Washington Street. The Great Hall is on one side of Epping and the school/health center are on the other. Students have classes on both sides and must cross the street throughout the day. Last spring, the city Transportation department posted a "SLOW" sign on a light pole but the sign is so high that it is hard for drivers to read or notice. There is no speed limit sign posted.

9th graders study motion and velocity in science. Shown in the attached photo are students this week who were using a radar detector collecting data to determine how fast the cars on Epping go.

Students will compile and analyze the data and share it with parents and community residents. Special thanks to Liz Butler, 9th grade science teacher, for giving students this opportunity to conduct action research for our community.
